Ignorance is Bliss?

There are certain things that we hold true in our minds, formed from observations as a child. These things just are and we never bother to question them because there is no reason to do so. The grass is green, McD's will always be serving burgers, or a person is going to be around forever. But what if one day the veil is lifted and you realize that someone has been pulling your finger all along? The grass is in fact not green, and all the colourblind people in the world were right. A huge financial scandal breaks out and McD's files for bankruptcy. Mortality rears its ugly head and the person won't be there forever doing what you're so accustomed to him/her doing. So how does one person deal with finding out that something they hold dear, something "constant", is in fact not what it appeared to be?

Perhaps there is a point at which we are all better off not knowing, or even at least if we knew, we would all be happier if the fact was shoved into the deep corners of our minds where the light does not shine. No, denial is not a river in Egypt, but something that we wrestle with everyday. To what point do we say, "That's enough, I'd rather not know"?

There are different ways each person deals with these issues. Some pretend that nothing ever changed. How wrong is it to grasp onto the past and/or proactively try to change things so it resembles more of what we want it to be?

Looking at the poverty in the world, our acquaintances' troubles, and things that sometimes we'd be quite comfortable not dealing with...it's like the a joke is being played on us. First you see it, now you don't! Or is it still there? Now are you going to go out and search for whether or not it really is still there, or make excuses and walk away from the optical illusion? As we grow and learn, God reveals more and more to us through what we experience. But maybe if we choose to ignore all to which the signs are pointing and instead put our blinders on, then in the end we're really only kidding ourselves. Oh but only if confronting this cognitive dissonance is as easy as listening to a joke.

Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all yours ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. ~Proverbs 3:5,6
