There's Something Fishy Going On!

Make yourself comfortable, it's an essay.

It seems to be that I bring out the worst in other people's driving, for example: Last summer I saw a man dash into the streets and get hit by a car in downtown. This past Friday as I was waiting at a red light, traffic in the other direction was almost snarled when a driver ran a red and another car almost plowed into him. He subsequently swerved, drove into the snow bank, onto a pedestrian island, and came to a stop some distance further down the road.

This morning as I was driving to and about 2 minutes from my church, I was approaching an intersection where the light was green for me. As I keep driving out of the corner of my eyes I saw a white car nearing the lights waiting to make a right turn. Lo and behold, this man decides to speed up and makes a right directly in the path of my P5, leaving me with next to no time to lean on the horn, slam on my brakes, and watch the scene unfold in front of me.

I plowed into the left side of his car towards the rear, and then he drove into the left lane where he hit a green car on the right side. The unsuspecting green car (at this point traveling at about 80 km/h) loses control, twists to the right, and screeches through a 180 degree spin. He finally comes to a stop when he hit the snow bank, and because he was now facing me I saw that he was in shock (not in a medical sense), as was everyone else involved in the accident.

Knowing that my bro and I were okay, I ran out to check on this man, who turned out to be an uncle from my church. He was on the phone calling his wife but at the same time obviously in pain from a sprained or twisted back. And for the 2nd time in my life I had to call 911 (the first time was when a car in a parking lot caught fire); the cops, paramedics, and firefighters all showed up within 5 minutes. It was also not the first time I've had a brush-in with firefighters, after there was a gas leak at Hansel caused by our lovely landlord driving into our house in Loo...but that's another story.

In any case, the emergency response team took over from that point on and the cops took down our information. The initial driver who made the right turn was himself quite shocked, apologetic, and speechless from the whole fandangle. Needless to say we didn't make it to church on time, and the p5 is out of commission for at least 2 weeks while it gets repaired at the dealership. There is also the whole mess of sorting out insurance, rental car arrangements, etc, but those are mere technicalities. The important thing is that nobody was hurt too seriously, and cars are replaceable objects after all. It could've been a lot worse, but by God's grace I'm still able to sit in front of a computer now and type this all out.

And on that note, a minor update on the to-do list.
  • Read Chinese newspaper/article daily: It hasn't been an everyday occurrence, but occasionally at work (about 4 times a week) I'd go to the Google news site and read their Chinese edition. During the breaks, of course.
  • Swimming and badminton with my sis: Hahaha. Enough said.
  • Go to MCBC's fellowship: Replaced by Ryerson's CCF instead because it's downtown and I can walk over after work on Wednesdays.
  • Chronicles of Narnia: DONE! Good read, makes me feel like a kid again.
  • Sell of some vintage dresses: Refer to the swimming and badminton point.
  • Soup kitchen: Refer to the previous point.
  • Treadmill: I've used it 4 times since making that list up, haha, but the next few weeks look promising.
  • Meet up with HS friend: Missed 2 weeks or so, but generally it's been good.
  • Learn the guitar: My bro and I did a little bartering...I get to harass him about not slacking in school, and he gets to do guitar lessons. It's a win-win situation, really.
  • Ate: At Spring Rolls.
  • Went: Skating at Mel Lastman Square with LCCF and snowboarding with my siblings.
  • Visited: None of the listed ones, haha. Yet.
  • Get to know someone at work better: Considering how 3 people in my corner of the office have left since the work term began, and a 4th person was recently laid off, my pool of "let's get to know them better" co-workers has been shrinking. But I've been joining the 2pm Caffeine Run group occasionally, which makes for interesting conversation.
Other than that work has been going alright, the office is oh so very quiet (pin drop silence...on a carpeted surface), but I had my first conference call (ever) the other day. One guy had an alarm going off in the back and he was told to put his phone on mute as to not disturb the meeting. When he did that, elevator music started playing, haha.

Winter Retreat was a hoot and a half, LCCF definitely has a lot of good sports in the fellowship! Pictographic evidence is available on Imagestation (username Powderpoof), way to go amigos. Warm fuzzies are also on their way, I apologize for my tardiness.

The pseudo reading week was quite pleasant, meeting up with out of towners who didn't have to work...we're definitely growing up eh? Looking back on old photos and hearing about past acquaintances just goes to show how much we've changed while we're still...us. There will always be stoopid things that happen in the relationships around us, but I suppose that's what keeps one on their toes, continuously challenged and ideally growing.

Forward march!

Or should I say...forward TO March?? Har har har. Until the next post - be blessed!
