Oh me oh my, it has happened again.
I was driving home from sushi tonight (sidenote: scratch another item off the to-do list) on the 401 when in my rearview mirror I saw a Saturn approaching really quickly. So I left the passing lane and went into the middle lane. This car passed me, going AT LEAST 150 km/h, and nearly nicked the front of my car when he switched lanes in front of me. I continued to watch with amazement as this guy weaved in and out of traffic, many cars forced to brake behind him, and he even managed to pass a truck in the slow lane using the -shoulder- lane (!), sending up a storm of gravel/sand/ice. Soon he disappeared from sight, and I thought that was the end of that.
Shortly after as I was taking the Mavis off-ramp, I came across a couple of cars slowing down. It certainly seemed odd that I saw white lights shining back at me, when normally looking at the back of cars you'd only see their red brake lights. Lo and behold I see the aforementioned car in the ditch, its bumper detached, the front end smashed, engine smoking, and nobody was doing anything except slowing down to watch. So with my phone handy and being one of the first ones on the scene, I got out of the car and ONCE AGAIN had to call 911.
My knees were shaking at this point, but I had to knock on the driver's window to make sure he was alright (and since the dispatcher asked whether I needed the police or ambulance). He seemed pre-occupied and busy at first, digging around for something and eventually finding a pack of gum. He barely managed to open his car and walk onto the road. And at this point I could clearly smell the alcohol on his breath, and nonchalantly asked if he had been drinking. He said no, and asked if he smelled like it. I said yes. He kept chewing. Cars were driving by, slowing down, and rubbernecking like nobody's business.
One man who slowed down rolled down his window and shouted, "Yo buddy was that you weaving in and out of traffic back there? It was you wasn't it? You almost got me killed!" and then drove off. By then the emergency vehicles were on their way and since I didn't actually witness the accident I decided to vamoose my caboose.
Was it a wise decision to leave so early? I don't know...but the OPP was on their way and this guy had nowhere to go. Plus the emergency dispatchers already had my cell phone number - twice in 5 days. So looking back on everything that happened tonight, again I realize how close I came to potential injury. I think...wait, I KNOW that I'm in good hands.
